6 Tips for Mask Wearing This Summer

You’re already hot and bothered from pregnancy hormones and with Summer here you might be finding it hard going wearing a mask.

Here’s our 6 tips to keep you more comfortable.

Choose the Right Fabric

Natural products such as bamboo or cotton are better when it comes to face masks. 100% cotton masks are easier to breathe through but absorb droplets easier so they can get soggy quickly.

Dr Chowell from with Georgia State University’s School of Public Health recommends a double-layer face mask made from bamboo fabric in light colors so it doesn’t absorb the sunlight. Bamboo is more absorbent than cotton. But only if you are not planning to stop to chat to anyone for an extended period. If you’re out for an evening walk with a friend as the temperatures drop Professor Chowell recommends a mask of nonwoven fabric for more protection (but they’re a lot less comfortable). According to Professor Taher Saif from the University of Illinois a light, breathable material like cotton will be more comfortable than medical and N95 masks and can be effective in preventing transmission.

Mints

In areas with high humidity you can find yourself getting overheated quickly in a mask (remember your core temp is already a few degrees hotter than usual due to pregnancy hormones). If you feel lightheaded or nauseous find a place to sit down (in the shade) or the store you’re in and take off your mask. I find chewing minty gum or sucking on a mint when I’m wearing my mask helps a lot.

Fan

Invest in a small hand held fan to keep the air moving (just not if you’re in a group as you risk blowing droplets towards you).

Bring Along Extra Masks

If you’re going to be out for a long period of time bring a couple of spare masks with you and be sure to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before changing your mask. Keep them in a ziplock bag so they are kept dry

Protect Your Skin

If your skin gets irritated due to using a mask use a noncomedogenic (non-pore-blocking) moisturizer and sunscreen. Wearing make up can clog your pores and lead to irritation and breakouts.
