Hypnobirthing Comfort Measures for the Car Ride to Hospital

So if you’re like most GentleBirth parents you want to avoid going in too early as being admitted to hospital before 4-5cm increases the likelihood of unnecessary intervention (including an unplanned cesarean).

If this is your first labor then it’s more likely that you’ll arrive at your hospital or birth center with plenty of time. If that’s the case and you still have plenty of time (you’re less than 4-5cm) consider going home or a nearby hotel if they’re open and order up some room service and take a bath. Ask for a room with the biggest tub and ask your partner for their credit card.

Use our GentleBirth Contraction (Surge) Timer - research shows that women who use a contraction timer that measures the strength of the surges as well as frequency stay home longer.

Know the route to the hospital.

Comfort in the Car

  • Take a test drive to the hospital so there’s no surprises with roadworks or unexpected detours.

  • Figure out where to park (and make a note of where you parked).

  • Keep the gas tank full (petrol for our European parents). You do NOT want to lean over and see that little light come on as you make your way to hospital.

  • Put a plastic covering on the seat and a towel for comfort.

  • Put your TENS machine on before you leave.

  • Wear your seatbelt - you might have to get ‘creative’ in the back seat - if you’re in active labor sitting can be really challenging….If you’re in the back seat I’d suggest your partner doesn’t drive like this - as tempting as it may be (I mean yes you’re more likely to get a blue light escort to the hospital instead of a ticket but don’t tell your partner that!).

  • Try and eyemask or dark glasses if driving during the day (labor can make your eyes feel extra sensitive to the light).

Use this acupressure point during surges in the car.

  • Grab a ziplock bag of ice from the freezer as you walk out the door and apply it to the left hand acupressure point seen in the video above.

  • Try the comb hack too.

  • Slow focused breathing will help. Your body is not going to be thrilled to be in a confined space where movement is limited. Help keep that stress response down with slow deliberate breathing (probably good for the driver too).

  • Use the Labor Companion session in the app or your affirmations.

  • Chew mint gum to reduce labor pain.

  • Peppermint essential oil for nausea and a spare empty plastic bag (just in case).

  • Turn the cold air on or open the window.

  • Bring a heat pack for your lower back or abdomen.

  • Bottled water to sip on.

  • Cut up a pool noodle for lower back counter pressure (if you’re sitting).
